| Description |
| Alfalfa (medicago sativa) is a perennial plant in the pea species which is a member of the legume family. Common names include Lucerne, Common Lucerne, and Purple Medick. Alfalfa is commonly recognized as the premier forage species as it has the highest relative feeding value (RFV) of all commonly grown crops. Alfalfa contains 15 to 23% crude protein, as well as provides an excellent source of vitamins and minerals so is often referred to as the “complete” animal feed. |

| Harvesting and Yields |
Alfalfa is typically cut three or four times a year depending on climate and location, thus resulting in high yields per acre. These are simply identified by 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th Cuttings.
Ideally, the first cutting is taken at the bud stage and the subsequent cuttings just as the field is beginning to flower or one-tenth bloom to ensure carbohydrates are at their highest. Average yields are 3.2 to 3.5 tons/acre. |
