Description
Oats (avena sativa) is an annual crop which is grown primarily for the grain. Oat hay is a viable option for farmers needing early season forages and is often planted as a rotation crop for alfalfa. It is grown as a good quality feed and provides a good combination of roughage and moderate protein.

Harvesting and Yields
As a protein source the oats should be harvested as they're starting to head out resulting in crude protein levels ranging from 14 to 16%. However, if energy is desired then it should be cut in the dough stage where crude protein levels will range from 10 to 12%.
